individuals in groups: The presence of others
- group:
- Direct interactions with each other over a period of time
- Joint membership in a social category based on sex, race, or other attributes
- Shared, ''common fate'', ''identity'', or ''set of goals''
- collective:
- People engaged in common activities but having minimal direct interaction
Social Facilitation
- social facilitation (社会的促進):

-
- Process whereby the presence of others enhances performance on easy tasks but impairs performance on difficult tasks
- mere presence theory:
- proposition that the mere presence of others is sufficient to produce social facilitation effects
- evaluation apprehension theory:
- Theory holding that the presence of others will produce social facilitation effects only when those others are seen as potential evaluators
- distraction-conflict theory:
- Theory holding that the presence of others will produce social facilitation effects only when those others distract from the task and create attention conflict
- these are all right
Social Loafing: when others relax us
(Social Loafing)

-
- Group-produced reduction in individual output on easy tasks where contributions are pooled
- way to prevent:
- people believe that their own performance can be identified and thus evaluated, by themselves or others
- The task is important or meaningful to those performing it
- people believe that their own efforts are necessary for a successful outcome
- group expects to be punished for poor performance
- group is small
- group is cohesive: membership in the group is valuable and important to the members, and the individuals like each other
deindividuation
- Loss of a person’s sense of individuality and the reduction of normal constraints against deviant behavior
- Environmental Cues:
- Accountability Cues
- Affect cost/benefit analysis
- Low: people commit deviant acts because they feel they are not going to be caught and punished
- Attentional Cues:
- Focus attention away from the self
- Low: people attend less to internal standards of conduct
- Accountability Cues
Group Popularization
Group Polarization
- What creates group polarization?
- Greater number of persuasive arguments
- Simply discovering other people’s opinions: social comparison theory
- social categorization
Groupthink
-
- Group decision-making style characterized by an excessive tendency among group members to seek concurrence
- Contribute to groupthink:
- Cohesiveness
- Group structure
- Stressful situations
cooperation, competition, and conflict
(Wikipedia)
-
- Situation in which a self-interested choice by everyone creates the worst outcome for everyone
- prisoner’s dilemma:
- Type of social dilemma in which one party must make either cooperative or competitive moves in relation to another party; typically designed in such a way that competitive moves are more beneficial to either side, but if both sides make competitive moves, they are both worse off than if they both cooperated
