Continuum of Social Influence
''Yielding to Influence'' <= obedience <= compliance <= conformity <=> independence => assertiveness => defiance => ''Resisting Influence''
conformity
- A change in one's behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. (SP 231)
- Tendency to change our perceptions, opinions or behavior in ways that are consistent with group norm
- The Classics:
- Sherif (1936) autokinetic effect
- Asch (1951)
Asch(1951)
- Asch (1951): conformity increases w/ group size
- 7 people: 6th person is the only real participant
- Asked to indicate which line matches original
- participant conformed on 37% of trials
Why do people conform?
- the influence of other people that leads us to conform because we see them as a source of information to guide our behavior; we conform because we believe that others' interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more correct than ours and will help us choose an appropriate course of action (SP 231)
- Influence that produces conformity when a person believes others are correct in their judgments
- >private conformity (private acceptance):tend to occur under informational influence
- Conforming to other people's behavior out of a genuine belief that what they are doing or saying is right. (SP 232)
- The change of beliefs that occurs when a person privately accepts the position taken by others
- The influence of other people that leads us to conform in order to be liked and accepted by them; this type of conformity results in public compliance with the group's beliefs and behaviors but not necessarily private acceptance of those beliefs and behaviors. (SP 240)
- Influence that produces conformity when a person fears the negative social consequences of appearing deviant
- >public conformity (public compliance):come from normative influence
- conforming to other people's behavior publicly without necessarily believing in what we are doing or saying. (SP 232)
- Superficial change in overt behavior, without a corresponding change of opinion, produced by real or imagined group pressure
two types of conformity
Experimental Task | Primary Effect of Group | Depth of conformity produced |
---|---|---|
Sherif's ambiguous autokinetic effect | informational social influence | private conformity |
Asch's simple line judgment | normative social influence | public conformity |
norms
- social norm
- The implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, and beliefs of its members. (SP 239)
- injunctive norm:
-
- People’s perceptions of what behaviors are approved or disapproved by others (SP 258)
- descriptive norm:
-
- People’s perceptions of how people actually behave in given situations, regardless of whether the behavior is approved or disapproved of by others (SP 258)
Compliance
- compliance:
- Changes in behavior that are elicited by direct requests.
- The language of request
- Norm of reciprocity
Sequential request strategies (承諾獲得方略:compliance-gaining strategy)
- foot-in-the-door technique:

-
- a two-step compliance technique in which an influencer sets the stage for the real request by first getting a person to comply with a much smaller request.
- we want our behavior to be consistent; otherwise, we increase cognitive dissonance.
- low-balling:

-
- tow-step compliance technique in which the influence secures agreement with a request but then increases the size of that request by revealing hidden costs
- door-in-the-face technique
-
- a two-step compliance technique in which an influencer prefaces the real request with one that is so large that it is rejected.
- that's not all, folks
- two-step compliance technique in which the influencer begins with an inflated request, then decreases its apparent size by offering a discount or bonus.
Assertiveness: When people say No
- Cialdini (2007): "I can admit it freely now. All my life I've been a patsy"
- No one really likes to say no.
- However, by simply knowing and being able to identify these techniques to try and get compliance you are better prepared to say "no".
Obedience
- obedience: a form of compliance that elicits a behavior change produced by the commands of authority.
- Milgram (1963)
- what conditions lead people to follow commands that violate their ethics?
- 40 male Ss, 1 confederate, 1 experimenter.
- Ss→"teacher"
- Confederate→"learner"
- Ss led to believe they were administering shocks to the "learner" when he gave a wrong answer.
- Experimenter: "It is absolutely essential that you continue".
- kind of foot-in-the-door technique
defiance: When people rebel
- ''Gamson et al. (1982)''
- Groups of nine
- "community standards study"
- Large oil company v. manager of a local services station
- Company suing manager for bad talking the high gas prices.
- Participants were supposed to follow a script that was pro-oil company.
- but they did not; instead, they said what they wanted to and were angry.
Continuum of social influence
Imp=f(S×I×N)
- the idea that conforming to social influence depends on the strength of the group's importance, its immediacy, and the number of people in the group.(SP 251)
- social influence depends on the ''strength'', ''immediacy'', and ''number of source persons relative to target persons''.
- Strength: determined by ''status'', ''ability'', or ''relation to target''.
- Immediacy: proximity in time and space to the target.
- Number: sources increase so do their influence - at least to a point.
